April 2025 marked a significant turning point for the U.S. iGaming industry, as it experienced a remarkable 32.5% year-over-year growth, generating $868.6 million in revenue. While larger states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania continue to dominate the gambling sector, West Virginia (WV), once considered a smaller player, has shown an impressive surge, becoming a standout performer. This unexpected success in a relatively small state has captured the attention of industry experts, as WV continues to outperform expectations.

Revenue Growth and Market Share

According to the American Gaming Association’s (AGA) April 2025 report, the combined U.S. online gaming market, which includes both iGaming and sports betting, reached a staggering $1.98 billion—an impressive 10.9% growth from the previous year. While sports betting experienced a modest increase of 0.7%, iGaming led the way with a robust 32.5% increase. Below is a closer look at the performance of key U.S. states and their contributions to the growth:

Pennsylvania (PA): $291.6 million (+26.4%)

New Jersey (NJ): $243.9 million (+23.7%)

Michigan (MI): $248.1 million (+33.9%)

West Virginia (WV): Approximately $24.5 million, reflecting an impressive growth of over 25%.

Notably, West Virginia’s iGaming sector experienced a staggering 57.3% increase compared to 2023, contributing significantly to the $878.8 million total gaming revenue in the state in 2024. This sharp growth signals the maturation of West Virginia’s online gaming market and highlights its emerging status as a leading player in the U.S. gambling landscape.

West Virginia’s Market Growth: A Surprising Leader

West Virginia, while small in population compared to states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania, has managed to carve out a dominant position in the iGaming space.
